In this lecture the collaborative research between SKLFS and the group of the University of Coimbra, led by Professor Domingos Viegas will be presented. This work is carried out with the support of the Academy of Sciences of China and the Portuguese National Science Foundation in the frame of projects Firewhirl and Firestorm. Recent developments on the experimental simulation of fire whirls produced by forest type fuels related to the work of the Group of SKLFS will be presented. Examples of joint research on the spread of fires under extreme conditions that are often found during large fire storms will be illustrated.

a brief presentation of the devastating fires that occurred in portugal on the 15th october of 2017 will be introduced that destroyed more than 500 thousand hectares and killed 51 people. the team of the university of coimbra was asked by the portuguese government to analyze these fires and the related accidents and to prepare a report on them. as a result of these fires several issues associated to life and property protection solutions were raised bringing new challenges to the scientific community.
